The job of the Forester will have the responsibility in the preparation, development, and implementation of Timber Harvest Plans and will assist the Area Foresters and Regional Manager with the management and operations of the 124,000 acre Burney / Lassen Forest.

Essential Job Functions


  • Adhere to all company safety standards.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings


  • Work with Supervisor and co-workers to:
    • Accurately collect data as specified
    • Correctly mark timber as directed
    • Assist as needed to mark boundaries
    • Adhere to survey protocols
    • Enter and process data as required
    • Develop maps as required
    • Complete forms as required
  • Project planning and/or budgeting
  • Contract development and/or supervision
  • Forester specific duties may include the following:
    • Assist in harvest planning and timber sales preparation
    • Assist in site prep and tree planting as needed
    • Assist in plantation maintenance and silviculture as needed
    • Supervise fieldwork
    • Assist in training
    • Assist in logging supervision and road maintenance as needed
    • Complete and submit government forms related to harvest operations
    • Assist in resource monitoring
    • GIS Analysis
  • Logging Administrator specific duties include the following projects:
    • Contract logging supervision
    • Ensure log quality as specified in sales contract
    • Ensure regulatory compliance and modify permits as needed
    • Complete and submit government forms related to harvest operations
    • Point person with government agencies related to timber harvest operations
    • Coordinate road maintenance
    • Supervise Road Crew
    • Assist in harvest planning and timber sales preparation


  • Ensure adequate asset maintenance, including
    • Preventative maintenance of issued equipment.
    • Preventative maintenance of vehicle.
    • Resource protection of timberlands.


  • Work with Supervisor to ensure compliance with Human Resources policies including
    • Complete and submit timecards on time
    • Maintain vehicle mileage and maintenance records
  • Supervise field crews
  • Supervise contractors
  • Participate in performance reviews on an annual basis.

Customer Interfaces

  • Represent FGS in a professional and respectful manner
  • Participate in professional and industrial associations
  • Represent FGS on professional and industrial associations as well as community groups.
  • Participate in public outreach for SFI

Other Duties

  • Other duties as may be assigned.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Forestry or extensive experience in forestry related field.
  • Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in California or able to qualify and take the RPF exam within 3 years.
  • Knowledge of the California Forest Practice Rules and some experience in THP preparation and writing preferred.
  • Computer skills with experience in Microsoft Office and ArcGIS software preferred.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Must be detail oriented, self motivated, and posess the ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with co-workers and management personnel in a pleasing and effective mannor.
  • Must be physically able to perform required fieldwork.
  • Expertise in timber sale preparation, including silviculture, resource protection, mensuration, scaling practices, logging systems, wildlife biology, or GIS analysis.
  • Experience with maps, aerial photography, compass, GPS, and GIS is desirable.
