Is your wine grape harvest looking lighter than expected? Don’t worry. The grape harvest experienced a very early start in 2026, followed by unusual springtime weather that left many grape clusters sparse or uneven. Overall numbers are certainly down, but experts say that a lighter harvest this year will help balance an oversaturated market. In other words, less is more.
In California, where 80% of the country’s wine is produced, a record-breaking heatwave in March resulted in an early bud break across the state. Rainy, windy weather came next — an unfortunate combination that damaged the pollination phase, caused grape shatter, and ultimately resulted in a lower yield of grapes. That’s tough news for growers, but it will help bring supply and demand back into equilibrium.
