New data from California’s Department of Food and Agriculture shows that the Golden State experienced a golden year in 2024. For the first time in history, California’s agricultural production value surpassed $61 billion. That’s an all-time high, as well as a 3.6% increase over the previous three years.
Dairy, almonds, and grapes were the state’s top three products in 2024. Despite a decline in milk production due to the avian flu outbreak, California’s dairy industry still earned a value of $8.6 billion. Almonds, on the other hand, experienced one of their best years to date, with a crop of 2.80 billion meat pounds and a total valuation of $5.66 billion. Grapes received a similar valuation as almonds, reaching $5.64 billion.
Looking ahead, 2025 promises to be another strong year for California agriculture. Thanks to favorable weather conditions, almonds are projected to reach 3 billion meat pounds this year. Milk will likely remain the state’s top commodity, with estimated annual earnings of $8.13 billion.
