Every year, California produces millions of tons of agricultural and food residues. Most of that material has limited economic value at the moment. Thanks to the state’s emerging bioeconomy, though, researchers have identified ways to unlock new value from agricultural byproducts previously seen as waste.
Renewable natural gas. Biofertilizers. Bioproducts. These can all be created by resources that farmers are already producing, according to a recent study by the University of California’s Giannini Foundation of Agricultural Economics. The goal isn’t to replace California’s traditional agricultural strengths; it’s to create new economic opportunities around them.
Almonds are a great example. Almond hulls are already marketed as livestock feed for the dairy industry, generating between $160 million and $230 million in value every year. Almond shells, on the other hand, have a much lower value. Now, researchers are pointing to a new opportunity: returning almond shells to orchards as a potassium amendment and mulch. This approach could earn an estimated $21 million to $31 million in additional annual revenue, while also reducing waste and supporting soil health with recycled nutrients. That’s not just good for the wallet; it’s good for the environment, too.
