In California, springtime is irrigation season.

“It’s time to wake up your irrigation systems,” says Sam Baldivia, irrigation sales manager at FGS. “Flushing your irrigation lines and cleaning your filters are a key point in having a great, healthy start to the spring season.”

The heart of any irrigation operation is the filtration system, and flushing out that system on a regular basis will help make sure it’s working properly. It can also decrease any plugging issues caused by buildups of calcium, bicarbonate, and algae.

This time of year, Baldivia spends much of his time outside of the office, traveling from customer to customer to help diagnose any irrigation issues. He loves the work, but he also loves equipping customers with the skills needed to prepare their own systems for a busy season. If you’re looking to give your irrigation system a check-up, he’s got plenty of advice.

“Make sure your filters are checked for any plugging issues,” he recommends. “With screen filters, you can pressure wash the screens. With media filters, you can change the sand or gravel, and even inject chemicals to help clean and kill algae.”

He adds, “Your main lines are recommended to be flushed, as well. Moving on to your hose, the hose should be opened on the ends and flushed until you see clear water.”

As always, FGS is standing by to help. If you’re looking for the right combination of chemicals to use with your media filters, give us a call. “The right concoction all depends on what’s going on with your well water or your surface water,” Baldivia says. “Give us a call and we’ll come out there, take a water sample, send it to a lab to analyze what’s happening to your water, and give you a recommendation of what you should be flushing your system with.”
